Making Headway's new garden project!

Starting in June of 2010, a couple of dedicated volunteers in collaboration with our staff came up with the idea of starting a gardening prorgram on-site at Making Headway.  Starting with nothing but grass, and with the help of local bussinesses (Pierson's lumber, Flora Organica's starts, and Freshwater farm's soil and starts) enough materials were donated to begin the garden class with clients.

We grew everything under the sun, including tomatos, golden zuchinnis, herbs, strawberries, raspberries, peas, beans, peppers, spinach, chard, and lettuce.  In fact the bounty got to be so much that we had to organize big garden lunches with the gardening class participants just to eat it all, and there was still plenty to share.  Our gardeners left every class with an over-flowing bag of fresh vege's from the garden and a big smile on their face. Now that the season has been winding down we have a new garden intern from H.S.U. to help us with the planning of the garden class.

Our clients and staff have already come up with some big ideas for expanding the garden next season.  We are excited about the possibility of creating a meditation garden space to include a zen water fountain, a small labiryth, and some medicinal herbs and flowers that aide in TBI recovery.  If you want to get involved in this project through donating or by volunteering, let our garden facilitator know by giving her a call 442-7668 ext 207.
